Accent Lighting

Also called decorative lighting, accent lighting is directed lighting that draws attention to an object or specific area of a room. Use accent lighting to highlight special objects or certain areas of a room, such as a painting or a shelf of your special treasures, or beautiful objets d’art.

Artificial Light

Artificial lighting is any light that is not created by sunlight (or moonlight), this includes fluorescent lighting, lighting from a lamp, or a chandelier. Artificial lighting can look natural or unnatural, depending on the type of bulb (think flourescent vs full spectrum), the style of covering (such as glass, cloth shade) and the location and lighting direction of all these create combined.

Bulb

Bulb is the common term for a base lamp. Two of the most common shapes are torpedo-shaped and flame-tipped. Both types can be either clear or frosted. Wattage ranges from 15, 25, 40 or 60 watts.

The most commonly used bulbs for chandeliers come in two common base shapes. The small threaded piece is typically a “C” type (the C stands for chandelier). The normal sized threaded piece is called an “A” type, which is the size of the base for most household light bulbs.

Lamp

What we call bulbs or light bulbs, folks in the lighting industry call lamps. A lamp is a replaceable component (such as the common incandescent light bulb) that produces light from electricity. Clear lamps create a clean, sharp light. Frosted lamps produce a soft, more diffused light. Lamps usually have a ceramic or metal base, which makes an electrical connection in the socket of a light fixture. This connection may be made with a threaded base, two metal pins, or a “bayonet mount” (candelabra base).
